Created by the Prague-based metalsmith Josef Ludvík Kottner, this goblet was among the artistically most interesting and, given its complex execution, most critically acclaimed exhibits shown in the Metal Engraving section at the Prague Jubilee Exhibition of 1891; “amongst the engraved works of art, Kottner’s excellent work was awarded the palm – namely his gold and silver-inlaid steel objects, engraved weapons parts, goblets, et cetera.”

Příbram native Josef Ludvík Kottner (1843–1923) was a metal engraver as well as an important figure in Prague’s cultural scene in the late 19th century. He significantly contributed to the work of Náprstek’s Czech Museum of Industry in Prague. In 1894 he was among the first members of the museum’s Board of Trustees. He also worked as the museum librarian and collection curator, and in 1898 he helped publish a guide

to the museum collections. (jme)
